Our president has been censured! Many school administrators have decided that his ideas are not important and not worthy for our students to hear. Censorship means that one person or group of people decide that something is objectionable and do not allow another person or group of people to read or view it. What was objectionable about the President's welcome back to school message?
He was not talking to the parents. If he was, he would have broadcast the speech in the evening from the Oval Office. He was talking to students; welcoming them to a new school year and telling them to study hard and take responsibility for their own education. He told them "Nobody gets to write your destiny but you. Your future is in your hands. Your life is what you make of it. And nothing -- absolutely nothing -- is beyond your reach, so long as you’re willing to dream big, so long as you’re willing to work hard. So long as you’re willing to stay focused on your education, there is not a single thing that any of you cannot accomplish, not a single thing. I believe that."
I do not understand why our students were not allowed to listen to these words in real time while they were among their peers. Schools that didn't show this speech missed a tremendous teaching opportunity!
If schools were taking a "neutral stance", they would have allow those students who wanted to watch the speech the opportunity to see it.
President Barack Obama is the United States President. Like him or hate him --- you must support him!
